Creating a Mailing List and/or a Subscribable Mailing List

Mailing lists are a popular way for people to send and receive information of a particular type. For example, you might wish to add all of your customers to a mailing list, then notify them all of upcoming sales or specials with just one email flyer. Each list can have a max of 1,000 names and each message can handle a 75k max text message.

Special Note: The maillists only work when you have the maillist address as the first address in the "To:" field when you send mail to it. It cannot be a CC or BCC.

To create a new mailing list:

  • Go to Add/Edit Mail List
  • Enter the name you wish the list to be under in the "Name of Maillist" box. For example, if you wanted the list to be newsletter@yourdomain.com, you would enter newsletter into the box.
  • Add addresses to your list using the entry boxes provided.
  • If you run out of spaces, save your changes and then edit the list again (see below) and more address entry boxes will be added to the form.
  • Click "Save Mail list

To edit a mailing list:

  • Check off "Edit a Mail list."
  • Choose the list you wish to edit from the pull down menu.
  • Click "Add/Edit/Delete Mail list."
  • A page with entry boxes for email addresses will now be displayed. When you are finished adding addresses to your list be sure to click on the "Add to List" button to add your entries to your new list. If you run out of spaces, save your changes and then edit the list again and more boxes will be added to the form.

To delete a mailing list:

  • Check off "Delete a Mail list."
  • Choose the list you wish to delete from the pull down menu.
  • Click "Add/Edit/Delete Mail list."

Subscribable Mailing Lists

Making a mailing list subscribable allows your customers to subscribe to your mailing list simply by emailing a certain address.

To add a subscribable mailing list:

  • Click Subscribable Mail Lists
  • Enter the address where your customers will send email to subscribe to the list.
  • Enter the mailing list name (i.e., newsletter@yourdomain.com).
  • Enter a short message that will be sent to your customers once they are subscribed to the list.

PASSWORD protection (only those with a passwd can mail to the list)

Choose maillists and then pick one of your lists to edit. Look for the passwd field and enter a passwd. Then save your changes.

Then, only users with the password can mail to the list, and they must meet these conditions:

1. The email sent to password-protected maillist should be plain text email (html version doesn't work). The password should be at the very first line in the message body. Then one empty line followed by message text.

2. message size should be smaller than 75K.

3. the maillist address should be the first one in "To:" field, it doesn't work in cc or bcc.

4. attachment doesn't work with maillist.

The passwd will be stripped out if above conditions are met. MOST important = use plain text.
